Toronto, Ontario – As the summer comes to a close, Henderson Brewing Co. is looking ahead to its fourth season of Pint Sized Conversations, an on-going series of Wednesday night programming where the brewery partners with diverse organizations from around the city. The goal is to put something different in front of the customers while they’re enjoying their beer.
For the upcoming 2019/2020 season, the brewery has partnered up with some of the best and brightest talent Toronto has to offer: Arts & Crafts Records, MOCA, House of Anansi Press, and VerbFactory alongside local filmmakers. Every Wednesday from October through March, each partner takes over the the tap room to play host to a casual, brief discussion about their world. Brewery regulars and newcomers are welcome, as well as people who wouldn’t typically consider going to a brewery to experience these discussions.
“Going to a discussion about Modern Art or attending a Book Launch can maybe feel intimidating” explains brewery GM Steve Himel “but we believe they might go better with a beer in hand in an informal space. On the other hand, someone who would normally find themselves on the Documentary Film circuit might not ever find themselves in a brewery. Our hope is that by hosting these types of events in the brewery, we’ll be opening up these worlds to entirely new audiences, while making everyone feel like they belong.”
The 1st Wednesday of each month features a cornerstone of the Pint Sized Conversations program, Vinyl Show & Tell, now in its fourth year. For the upcoming season, Henderson is thrilled to welcome iconic Toronto record label Arts & Crafts into the fold. Each month, anyone can bring in records from their own collections and get on the mic and tell personal stories about them. Arts & Crafts will be on-hand supplying prizes for each story-teller. They will also previewing new record releases and have exclusive music, books, apparel and more available. For the fourth year running, Bloordale’s Dead Dog Records will be at the brewery too, with their Vinyl Pop Up store, and Parkdale mainstay CiCi’s Pizza is on-hand with complimentary pizza for everyone in attendance.
Henderson and Torontos’s Museum of Contemporary Art (better known as MOCA) have been neighbours for exactly one year, but their partnership goes back further than that. MOCA partnered on the 2017/2018 season of Pint Sized Conversations, and they’re back again this year for the 2nd Wednesday of each month with their Speaker Series, Body of Work. It will bring a focus on their immediate community and beyond by hosting artists and those who have worked across the floors of MOCA Toronto into the brewery to discuss their individual practices: Curators, Directors, artists and the art community at large.
The 3rd Wednesday of each month marks the 4th year of House of Anansi Press and Henderson’s partnership. Each month, Anansi will curate a roster of authors with new novels who come into the brewery for an informal Q & A dubbed Books & Beer. This year, Anansi and Henderson are building on the past 3 years by inviting carefully selected moderators into the fold to complement and fully enhance the conversations. This season’s authors include Giller Prize Winner Lynn Coady, Zalika Reid-Benta and Joanna Pocock, and moderators Donna Bailey Nurse and Steven W. Beattie, among others.
Film festivals in Toronto are nothing new – there’s TIFF and Hot Docs, and now Henderson has one too. Over a casual discussion one day with VerbFactory founder Richard Berman, it was discovered that there’s a wide variety of local films in existence – films and documentaries alike – that are extremely short, and rarely seen by the general public. On the Last Wednesday of the month, Henderson will play host to the 5 Minute Film Fest, a showcase of these films, alongside the home-grown talent behind them. Each month, VerbFactory will bring in films and documentaries, screen the 5 Minute Films, and interview the filmmakers afterwards.
All events are free and inclusive. Tickets are available on eventbrite, which include a complimentary beer and guaranteed admission.
