Toronto, Ontario – On Thursday April 18, Henderson Brewing will releases the latest beer in its Ides Series, the Ides of April: Picnic Table Beer. Canada’s very first park was officially enacted in Toronto in 1860, and is now known as Queen’s Park. Henderson is willing to bet that people have been enjoying beers in parks ever since. The Junction Triangle brewery wants to celebrate that history and tradition by creating a table beer that’s light and refreshing and ideal for drinking at your local picnic table.
“There has been a lot of discussion recently around the current government
wanting to change the laws regarding drinking beer in public parks,” says
brewery GM Steve Himel “but any Torontonian knows that there’s a great and long-standing tradition around drinking beer in your local park, whether that’s Queen’s Park, Trinity Bellwoods, Christie Pitts or Withrow. When the weather warms up, people hit the parks, spread out the picnic blanket, and sit and drink beer together.”
Picnic Table Beer is a Table Beer made with Meyer Lemon zest. It’s 3.7% ABV, effervescent, clean and crisp. “April is the perfect month to brew a beer like this” explains Henderson Head Brewer James Turco, “The parkas are off, the sun is finally out, and you want a beer that’s perfect for afternoon hang outs. Picnic Table Beer is just that – it’s light, it’s thirst-quenching, and with just a hint of citrus, so there’s a little more character than your typical light beer, but not sugar-y and overwhelming as a radler can sometimes be.”
The Official Launch of the Ides of April will take place at Henderson Brewing Co. on Sterling Road in Toronto on Thursday, April 18 at 6pm sharp. “Normally the launches take place on the middle Friday of the month, but that’s Good Friday this year, so we moved the launch up a day this time.” says Himel. People at the brewery at that time will be the first to try the beer; as with every Ides launch, complimentary samples are given out to all. Alongside the beer, complimentary picnic-appropriate food will be provided by Downtown farm-to-table eatery FARMR.
Picnic Table Beer will then be available on draught in Henderson’s tap room, in 473ml cans in their Bottle Shop, and at select bars and restaurants around Toronto. Like all of Henderson’s Ides beers, it’s brewed in limited quantities, and is not around for long.
